Five Need-To-Know Ladder Maintenance Tips

It may sound a bit odd to heard the word "ladder" and "maintenance" in the same sentence to most people. The simple reason is, in our minds we consider ladders to be a rare breed of tool that can be neglected of any extra attention while continuing to work as if it were brand-new. Suprise! Your ladder requires attention like so many other household items. This is why we've provided some of the must-do's with our ladder maintenance tips.

Ladder Maintenance Tip #1: Domestic ladders should be subject to a general ladder check-up at least once every six months and at least once every month for service ladders.

Ladder Maintenance Tip #2: A detailed and tidy log should be kept about a ladder. A typical log file includes: date, ladder type, length, parts including feet, Locks, rope/cable, beams, and rungs, noted problems including when and where for future reference, Visual dents, Corrections required, date fixed, ladder sections cleaned and re-waxed and returned to service and finally, dates and signature.

Ladder Maintenance Tip #3: It is recommended to apply grease, wax or paraffin as lubricating agents when required. This is an important part of ladder maintenance. The Ladder maintenance tips would suggest, for example, paraffin wax for the fiberglass version of the ladder or grease when dealing with an aluminum ladder.

It should be noted though, that old candle wax or paraffin wax may be applied almost anywhere barring a few exceptions.
Ladder Maintenance Tip #4: A fact that should be remembered is that ladder maintenance tips always apply and should be carried out no matter the make of the ladder or what it's used for. In this case, you don't have to rely solely on the brand name of your ladder. Relying only on a brand name won't prevent injury or a fatal accident. It is totally your responsibility to look after your ladder since it is for YOUR safety.

Ladder Maintenance Tip #5: The lock parts of your ladders need to be coated with appropriate lubrications. Following this step ensures the longevity of your ladder and helps to prevent rust formation.
