Most ladders fall under the category of portable ladders. Take for instance the different makes of ladders like the Step ladder, Extension ladder, Platform ladder, Attic ladder, Rolling ladder, Telescopic ladder, Access ladder, Fire ladder, Escape ladder etc...

All these ladders fall under the category of the portable ladder.

Here are some simple instructions to know when using a portable ladder:

It is not recommended to use a portable ladder in a straight parallel position.
It is not recommended to use a portable ladder with objects in hand.
It is not recommended to use a portable ladder on the last three rungs.
It is not recommended to use a portable ladder if it is positioned on a makeshift base.
It is not recommended to use a portable ladder if there is a better option like a staircase, which is a permanent installation.
It is not recommended to use a portable ladder when two or more ladders are joined together.
It is not recommended to use a portable ladder if it is made of wood and more specifically, if it is painted.

It is advisable for all users of portable ladders to follow the standard laid down by the Australian Ladder Authority.

The Australian Ladder Authority has this to say, "Portable ladders should comply with the requirements of the relevant Australian Standard:

AS/ NZS 1892.1 - 1996 Portable ladders Part 1: Metal
AS/ NZS 1892.2 - 1992 Portable ladders Part 2: Timber,
AS/ NZS 1892.3 - 1996 Portable ladders Part 3: Reinforced plastic
AS/ NZS 1892.5 - 1999 Portable ladders Part 5: Selection, safe use and care."

They also gave the following tips on using a ladder safely:

The ladders must be supported by a sound base.
It is not recommeneded to walk on a ladder under any circumstances.
The ladder slope should be set at a ratio of 4:1.
It is recommended that not more than one person should work on a ladder at a time.
It is not recommended to climb higher than the third rung from the top of the ladder.
